Project imparts free music education to the talented children from less privileged backgrounds
Chennai, 3 April, 2015: HARMAN India is strengthening its partnership with A.R. Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory (KMMC) – a school of music and music technology and the A.R. Rahman Foundation by supporting their ‘Sunshine Orchestra’ project – a program specifically designed to impart free music education to talented children from less privileged backgrounds. Over the last five years, HARMAN has been donating to Rahman’s key educational initiatives including awarding the ‘JBL Sound Scholarship’ that enabled KMMC to hire international faculty back in 2012.
The brainchild of the maestro himself, the Sunshine Orchestra project has identified, selected and trained more than 60 students from economically underserved sections of the society; otherwise having no access to music instruments, training or guidance. These students have undergone rigorous training on western classical music from various legends in this field. Today, these young musicians are on their way in becoming experts in the art of orchestral instrument performance, with some of them already performing with various professional ensembles. The project aims to train more than 200 such students in the next two years.
“HARMAN has been partnering with Mr. Rahman and his school to increase access to music education for all children, recognizing the enormous benefits these exposures can yield for young people,” said Mr. M. Lakshmi Narayan, Country Manager & Managing Director, HARMAN India. “We commend the team at KMMC who have achieved so much for the next generation of composers and musicians and are extremely proud to play a larger role in their endeavors.”
The Sunshine Orchestra made a rare public appearance at KMMC’s annual event tonight. “It is a very special moment for me to watch these students perform. With hard work and dedication, they have reached such great heights. I’m grateful to HARMAN for helping me in making my vision a reality,” said Mr. A.R. Rahman.
KMMC Annual event is organized between 2-4 April 2015 at Arumbakkam, MMDA Colony, Chennai.
